Bringing home a new baby can be a joyful and stressful experience. The birth of a baby challenges you in many ways: hormonally, physically, emotionally, socially, psychologically, and financially. Well meaning friends and family may also add to your stress levels. That is why it is important for you and your mate to learn effective techniques to manage your stress naturally.

Here are some tips you should keep in mind-these tips will help you make a smoother transition throughout your baby’s first year.

*Establish a good plan for dealing with the new baby, other children and well meaning visitors. Plan a schedule for who is going to get up in the middle of the night. Late night feedings can become overwhelming when the mother is exhausted or sleep deprived.

*Get as much rest as you can during the day. Sleeping when the baby sleeps is time-tested advice and it works.

*Have someone help you with the baby. Do not try to be a super mom. Being a super mom can make you feel overwhelmed.

*Eat healthy foods. Avoid caffeine.

*Exercise moderately helps to release endorphins that will improve your mood

*Make time for yourself away from the baby and other children

*Don’t hesitate to call on friends, family or hire someone to help as much as possible.

*Stick to a daily schedule or “to-do” list as much as possible. However, remain flexible as you adapt to your baby’s ever-changing needs.

*Involve the new father and other siblings in the care and feeding of the new baby as much as possible. Siblings need to bond with the new baby in a loving and caring way.

*Join online parenting support groups

*Make time to rejuvenate and relax daily

Your home is your sanctuary and a refuge from the demands of the outside world. It is supposed to be a place where you can relax and unwind after a hard day of work, school or other stressful activities. However if your home is disorganized and cluttered, it can have a negative affect on your overall well-being.

Living in a cluttered environment can steadily drain of your energy and life focus. The clutter can overwhelm you and subtly contribute to increasing your stress levels. A messy home or workplace can be a constant visual and mental reminder of how much work you have left undone. Environmental disorganization can lead to mental and physical stagnation, which can have a negative affect on so many other areas of your life.

Ending a relationship can be a very stressful experience. It is not easy ending a relationship, especially if you have been dating this person long term.
Breakups are painful and difficult for everyone involve. It can be especially painful when you waited too long to end an unsatisfying relationship. You may have held on to the relationship hoping the other person would change their ways. Perhaps you were hoping against hope that the difficult circumstances shadowing the relationship would finally be resolved. Perhaps you finally accepted the fact that you and the other person have different goals, dreams and expectation. Nevertheless, you have concluded that the relationship was not meant to be.

You may have repeatedly gone over the pros and cons of ending your relationship with this person. You do not want to hurt the other person or be involved in a horrible scene. You just want to end the relationship without the drama. Depending on the circumstances and the person’s temperament, the best thing to do is to meet with the person and let them know it is over. If you believe that the person may cause a scene, perhaps being in a public place might deter them. Whichever location you decide to tell the person, you should keep breakup statement brief and courteous. There is no need to be mean just to devastate them. It is best to end the relationship on good terms.

On the other hand, if you are the one being dumped, it may be hard to accept the fact that this person does not want to be with you anymore. Perhaps you had hoped that this person was the one you would be together forever. Perhaps you may feel that if your former boyfriend/girlfriend gave you another chance, things would be different. Perhaps you worry that you did something wrong to make he or she feel this way. Whatever the reason the person gives you for the breakup, it is best to accept his or her decision and move on with your life. You cannot make a person love you. You cannot make a person stay with you. They have to be with you because that is where his or her heart is.

Things you should do or not do after breaking up with someone:
· Do not string the person along
· Do not give the person hope when there is no hope
· Move on with your life and wish the your EX the best
· Don’t get in an argument as you why you won’t take them back
· Do not continue intimate relationships with your former lover. It would only confuse them.

Things you should or should not do after someone has broken up with you:

· Do not call the other person to beg them to take you back. Begging will only drive them further away
· Allow yourself to grieve or cry if you must
· Seek emotional support from friends, family or counseling
· Keep a journal to work out your feelings. Do not mail this letter to your ex
· Take good care of yourself
· Get plenty of rest, eat right
· Try to continue your normal activities to keep your mind off the other person

Death of a loved one, friend or even a pet is a major cause of stress. The feelings of loss can be overwhelmingly devastating and immobilizing. Death is an emotionally, mentally, and physically draining experience. The bereaved one may have feelings of intense sorrow and hopelessness. They may have difficult getting through the stages of grief.

Experts believe that grieving is normal. Grieving is necessary in order for people to accept a deep loss and carry on with their lives. Working through the stages of grief can be extremely painful and stressful, but necessary to ensure the person’s overall physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. If people do not allow themselves to grief the loss, the grief may become bottled up inside of them. Bottled up emotions can lead to physical and mental illnesses later on.

While No two people grieve in the exact same way, some people may need medical intervention and medications to help them get through the grieving process, while others may not need medical intervention to cope. The grieving process can take some time. How long it takes depends on the bereaved person’s coping mechanisms, and the circumstances surrounding the death. If the bereaved person has unresolved issues with the person who died, the grieving process can take many years. In general, though, it usually takes one to two years to get through the stages of grief.

Caring for a sick, elderly or disabled family member or friend can be an extremely stressful lifestyle. A caregiver is anyone who provides help to another person in need. An informal or family caregiver is usually responsible for helping the chronically sick, elderly or disabled person with basic daily tasks. The person receiving the care may have serious medical conditions and are unable to care for him or herself at home. Informal or family caregivers usually assist the patient with many activities such as:

*taking medicine
*keeping track of medical appointments
*keeping the house clean, buying groceries and paying bills
*cooking and feeding the patient
*bathing, dressing and helping the patient use the toilet
*provide emotional, psychological support
*help find social or government services
*dealing with other family members

Informal caregivers are not paid. They work long stressful hours without a break. They may be the sole caregivers. They may have difficulty getting other family members or friends to help care for the patient. They may have to care for their spouses and children while caring for the patient.

Being a caregiver can become a very demanding and stressful responsibility. Caregivers without emotional, psychological and social support services can easily burnout. Therefore, it is very important for the caregiver to find ways to reduce or eliminate their stress by learning effective stress reduction techniques.

Moving is in the top 10 causes of stressful life events. Relocating can be stressful because our homes are a source of emotional security and physical protection. Our homes with its accumulated possessions provide us with a sense of belonging. Going through our possessions can trigger both good and bad memories of a life we once lived. It can be stressful to leave our friends, extended family members and communities behind us. Moreover, the whole strain of packing, unpacking, heavy lifting and to do lists can be physically, mentally and an emotionally draining process.

Moving can be very stressful for every member of the family including pets. It can be hard for children to readjust to a new environment, new friends and new schools. Pets may have difficulty adjusting to the new surroundings. Sometimes animals may develop behavioral problems due to losing their sense of where things belong. Moving can also be stressful on couples and put an added strain on the relationship.

Finding ways to reduce the stress of moving can be a key making a successful physcial and emotional transition to the new location.

For some people trying to maintain a dating life can be extremely stressful. It is exhausting going on endless dates searching for the right person. The stress of dating can become overwhelming for anyone especially for single parents. Single parents families may be juggling many more responsibilities and difficulties than a dating person without children. Single parent daters may be dealing with:

• trying to spend quality time raising children
• difficulties at work
• finding enough time for household chores and other responsibilities
• dealing with children’s homework, school problems and peer relationships
• visitation, custody and support problems
• ongoing conflicts between the single parent and the non custodial parent
• guilt about taking away valuable time from children
• added cost of paying for babysitters
• not getting enough help from extended family members
• problems arising from the parents dating or entering new relationships
• when to introduce the children to the new boyfriend or girlfriend

Many of the above factors can add considerable stress to an already stressful lifestyle of single parenting. While it is understandable that the single parent wants to find a suitable mate, they have to considered how their dating lives affect their children’s lives.

Most children may not adapt well to the parent introducing another person into their lives. They may view the parents’ dates as a competition for the parent’s attention and affection. Therefore, it is vitally important to slowly introduce the children to the person you are dating. This person should be someone you are serious about and plan to marry. Children should not be exposed to everyone you date just serious ones.

Ideally the best time to introduce the children to the serious person you are dating is when the children are grown. For most people waiting this long to introduce the children may not be a viable option. Nevertheless, making the transition from a single parent household to blended family is an important decision, which should not be taken lightly or done in haste.

Careful planning is the key to reducing stress for these families. Good stress management skills would be extremely helpful tools for single parents, their children and the future life partner. Since single parent families are already living stressful lives, effective stress management skills can ease their anxiety, help them to better adapt through the transition, and help them to make better life decisions.

You have numerous important decisions and choices to make about the wedding. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed out from numerous stressors. These stressors can come from:

• Couples getting on each other’s nerves
• uncooperative vendors
• Petty quarreling from divorced family members and friends
• Your parents
• Out of control expenses
• Doubts about your future partner and/or unresolved issues
• Meeting wedding deadlines
• Work obligations
• Blending the two families together
• Dealing with step parenting issues
• Too many well meaning people giving advice about wedding

Some or all of these factors may make you feel so overwhelmed. You may even begin having thoughts about elopement. Do not worry some stressful feelings and thoughts are normal ones. However, learning effective techniques to manage stress can be the key to turning the wedding planning process into a positive experience for both you and your partner.

To reduce stress you must first manage those sources of stress within your control

• Seek pre-martial counseling to discuss unresolved issues and expectations
• Spend quality time with your future partner. Make one date night and avoid talking about the wedding
• Don’t expect perfection about the arrangement
• Keep within your budget
• Time management skills
• Make time to take care of yourself. Eat right and get proper exercise
• Join online wedding planning support groups
• Plan appropriate gathering for the two families to meet
• Find cooperative vendors who are able to meet the deadlines
• Delegate responsibilities to reliable friends, family members or experienced professionals
• Set appropriate boundaries with bickering family members and friends
• Say ‘no’ to what you don’t want and ‘yes’ to what you do want

When planning a wedding there may be certain stressors, which make you feel out of control. However, you can always control your reactions and perceptions in these situations.

During the winter months, some people suffer stress due to the shorter daylight hours. The lack of sunshine causes them to become moody, stressed out, irritable or depressed. They may lose their appetite, lack energy, become easily fatigue, have difficulty concentrating, increase anxiety and difficulties in social interactions. This condition is known as Seasonal affective Disorder (SAD), winter depression or winter blues. Winter-onset SAD is estimated to affect 10 million to 25 million people in the US. SAD affects more women than in men.

Some people may experience mild, moderate or severe forms of stress due to lack of sunshine. Exposure to natural sunlight may improve their mental well-being. When natural sunlight is not available, artificial light therapy is another alternative. Usually, the person sits in front of a light box, or wears a special light visor for a certain length of time each day.

Any health illness, injury or condition can add stress to a person’s life. Learning effective relaxation techniques can be useful tools to improving overall health.

If you believe you have SAD, please consult with your health care professional
