Life is stressful

Posted by karen under Main Content

Life is full of stressors. It is important to remain positive and not let negative stress affect you.

Here’s an inspirational story to keep you positive - enjoy!

There was this museum laid with beautiful marble tiles with a huge marble lady statue displayed in the middle of the lobby.

Many people came from all over the world just to admire this beautiful marble lady statue.
Here’s an inspirational story for those who are feeling a little down and out:

One night, the marble tiles started talking to the Marble lady.

Marble tile: Marble lady, it’s just not fair, it’s just not fair! Why does everybody from all over the world come all the way here just to step on me while admiring you? Not fair!

Marble lady: My dear friend, marble tile, Do you still remember that we were actually from the same cave?

Marble tile: Yeah! That’s why I feel it is even more unfair. We were born from the same cave and yet we receive different treatment now. Not fair!

Marble lady: Then, do you still remember the day when the designer tried to work on you, but you resisted his tool?

Marble tile: Yes, of course I remember. I hate that guy! How could he use his tool on me, it hurt so badly.

Marble lady:That’s right! He couldn’t work on you at all as you resisted being worked on.

Marble tile: So???

Marble lady:When he decided to give up on you and start working on me instead, I knew at once that I would be something different after his efforts. I did not resist his tool, instead I bore all the painful tools he used on me.

Marble tile: Mmmmmmmmm…………

Marble Lady:

My friend, there is a price to everything in life. Since you decided to give up half way, you can’t blame anybody who steps on you now

The moral of the story is:
The more hard knocks you go through in life, the more you’ll learn and put them to use in the future.
Do not be discouraged by setbacks, challenges and failures.
No pain……no gain
Past is past, you can’t change it, but it is actually a blessing in disguise.
Past was good, present is better and the future will always be the best.
KEEP YOURSELF FOCUSED ON OUR HIGHEST VALUES, YOUR GOALS, AND YOUR ASPIRATIONS IN LIFE

The Scientific Basis of Meditation

Posted by karen under Meditation

Meditation is commonly misunderstood as a worship or prayer. But it is not. Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. listening to your own
breathing, or having an awareness of your heart beating. Even listening to the rustling of leaves or the birds singing is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other
distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation.

Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means ‘a cessation of the thought process’. It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts
and various patterns.

The brain is an electrochemical organ using electromagnetic energy to function. Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves emanating from the brain
is displayed in the form of brainwaves. There are four categories of these brainwaves. They range from the high amplitude, low frequency delta to the low amplitude, high frequency beta.
Men, women and children of all ages experience the same characteristic brainwaves. They are consistent across cultures and country boundaries.

During meditation brain waves alter.

BETA - 13-30 cycles per second - awaking awareness, extroversion, concentration, logical thinking - active conversation. A debater would be in high beta. A person making a speech, or a
teacher, or a talk show host would all be in beta when they are engaged in their work.

ALPHA - 7-13 cycles per second - relaxation times, non-arousal, meditation, and hypnosis

THETA - 4-7 cycles per second - day dreaming, dreaming, creativity, meditation, paranormal phenomena, out of body experiences, ESP, shamanic journeys.
A person who is driving on a freeway, and discovers that they can’t recall the last five miles, is often in a theta state - induced by the process of freeway driving. This can also occur in the shower or tub or even while shaving or brushing your hair. It is a state where tasks become so automatic that you can mentally disengage from them. The ideation that can take place during the theta state is often free flow and occurs without censorship or guilt. It is typically a very positive mental state.

DELTA - 1.5-4 or less cycles per second - deep dreamless sleep

During meditation, people often feel a sense of no space. Scientists investigating the effect of the meditative state on Buddhist monk’s brains have found that portions of the organ previously active become quiet, whilst pacified areas become stimulated. Using a brain imaging technique, Dr. Newberg and his team studied a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks as they meditated for approximately one hour. When they reached a transcendental high, they were asked to pull a kite string to their right, releasing an injection of a radioactive tracer. By injecting a tiny amount of radioactive marker into the bloodstream of a deep meditator, the scientists soon saw how the dye moved to active parts of the brain.

Later, once the subjects had finished meditating, the regions were imaged and the meditation state compared with the normal waking state. The scans provided remarkable clues about
what goes on in the brain during meditation. “There was an increase in activity in the front part of the brain, the area that is activated when anyone focuses attention on a particular task”, Dr Newberg explained. In addition, a notable decrease in activity in the back part of the brain, or parietal lobe, recognized as the area responsible for orientation, reinforced the general  suggestion that meditation leads to a lack of spatial awareness.

Dr Newberg explained: “During meditation, people have a loss of the sense of self and frequently experience a sense of no space and time and that was exactly what we saw.” The
complex interaction between different areas of the brain also resembles the pattern of activity that occurs during other so-called spiritual or mystical experiences.

Meditation for Weight Loss

Posted by karen under Meditation

Meditation is a practice that brings about not only physical benefits, but psychological benefits as well. The term “mind over matter” has been in existence since time in memorial. Instead
of relying on diet pills which have numerous and sometime dangerous side effects, why not consider using powerful imagery or visualization techniques with meditation for weight loss and
dieting.

It has been proven over and over again that what you are imagining right now will be what life gives you in the future. When you use meditation for weight loss imagine yourself having the
ideal figure that you desire. See yourself in the shop windows as the slim, healthy individual, full of life and energy. Fell yourself running along the beach, enjoying the wonders of nature
and the bounce of energy in your feet as you run.

Often times when people think about weight loss, they are filled with doubts. Look at the people around you, the average man on the street who has been struggling with weight loss
using the latest diet fad, slimming pills and rigorous exercise. Everything looks like a challenge.

Obesity and the desire to eat too much has been ingrained in us pyschologically since young. When we were young, our mothers comforted us with ice cream or candy. these are the so-
called comfort foods that help us deal with stress.

Meditation on the other hand will help you feel relaxed increase your self-awareness, so you’re less likely to give in to emotional eating when you’re practicing meditation. The most
important aspect may be incorporating non-judgmental awareness into eating. To reach any target, such as weight loss, positive visualization can play an important part. Practicing
meditation 10 minutes a day can help you achieve that goal.

There are many tape and CDs that help you focus your mind and aid you in meditation. Once you are in a relaxed state, you can visualize yourself having the ideal weight you yearn for.
You will be able to see yourself playing the sports that you’ve always wanted to but the lacked the stamina or energy. You sill see choosing healthy food as an opportunity, rather than a
punishment. Your outlook of life will be positive and things will go your way smoothly.

Combining meditation and imagery is one of the most powerful mind-body techniques and once you master the technique you will become the person you want to be.
But remember, whilst you must not ignore exercise completely, just be aware that meditation for weight loss is definitely worth your consideration. Many people from all walks of life have
had amazing and lasting benefits.

Why learn Meditation?

Posted by karen under Meditation

People decide to learn meditation for a variety of reasons. Some learn meditation to relax and relieve stress, while others learn meditation to lose weight or cure addictive behaviors like
smoking, alcohol without the use of prescribed drugs. Yet others want to be more productive at work or achieve better grades at school. Many others learn meditation to alleviate many
stress related illnesses like hypertension. Some learn meditation to find inner peace and happiness, while others just want to be more in touch with their spiritual self.

People are beginning to appreciate the importance of a few minutes of meditation in their lives. Celebrities, professional sports people and many successful business people are enjoying
wonderful benefits in their lives because they meditate. Many employers are providing courses for their employees to learn meditation in order to reduce the number of staff falling ill and
low morale.

Facts speak for themselves. Statistics show that people who practice meditation have marked improvements in their mental and physical health. Clinical studies show that meditation
helps lower blood pressure, reduces anxiety, cures insomnia, lowers respiratory rates and reduce depression. It is because of these findings that more and more doctors are recognizing
the therapeutic benefits of meditation and are suggesting that their patients learn meditation.

There are many different types and techniques for people who decide to learn meditation. These can come in the form of CDs, videos, books and costs vary.

What is Aromatherapy?

Essential oils stimulates the powerful sense of smell.
It is known that odors we smell have a significant impact on how we feel.

In dealing with patients who have lost the sense of smell, doctors have found that a life without fragrance can lead to high incidence of psychiatric problems such as anxiety and depression.

We have the capability to distinguish 10,000 different smells. It is believed that smells enter through cilia (the fine hairs lining the nose) to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls our moods, emotions, memory and learning.

Studies with brain wave frequency has shown that smelling lavender increases alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with relaxation. Fragrance of Jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the head, which are associated with a more alert state.

Scientific studies have also shown that essential oils contain chemical components that can exert specific effects on the mind and body. Their chemistry is complex, but generally includes alcohols, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and terpenes.

Clinical studies have shown the following:

Aromatherapy can be used to reduce Stress -
In a study conducted at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York, patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reported 63 percent less claustrophobic after getting exposed to the aroma of vanilla. There was no change in their heart rate. Obviously, the aroma reduced their anxiety probably by the pleasant memories evoked by the vanilla aroma or by some other physiological response.

In another study, 122 patients who were in an intensive care unit, reported feeling much better when aromatherapy was administered with the oil of lavender (compared to when they were simply given a massage or allowed to rest.) No changes in the patients who were given aromatherapy was observed in the blood pressure, respiration, or heart rate. As we mentioned before, Japanese have reported less mistakes by keypunch operators when exposed to fragrance.

Aromatherapy can alter Behavior -
Considerable evidence exists that fragrant compounds and aromatherapy have a profound effect on our mind and behavior. Animal studies have found that hyperexcited mice (as a result of consuming a large quantity of caffeine) was calmed by the aroma of lavender, sandalwood, and other oils sprayed into their cages. The same mice were found to become very irritable when exposed to the aroma of orange terpines, thymol, and some other substances. These oils were all detected in their bloodstream after about an hour.

So next time you feel stressed, go ahead and try some Aromatherapy.
