Can Stress be Food Related?
Last night my stress was food related.
While eating I began choking and could not swallow my food.
I tried drinking water to get things to go down but that didn’t work.
I wanted to throw up but couldn’t bring anything up.
I had to stop eating and leave the table because I was so uncomfortable. I know this isn’t a thrilling topic but it was stressful and was one of those things I couldn’t forsee.
I didn’t require the Heimlich maneuver as my breathing wasn’t stopped up but it was very uncomfortable and embarrassing. Thankfully it happened in my own home rather than out in public somewhere. I couldn’t even drink water without it causing discomfort and coming back up.
I believe there are a couple of solutions to this predicament. One, cut my food up into small bites, and two, chew the heck out of the bites I take before swallowing.
I will try to remember this in the future to prevent this stressful situation.
In the end, as I said, I left the table and didn’t try to drink or eat anything more. I did some other things to take my mind off the situation and did some deep breathing exercises. This alleviated the feeling of distress but I didn’t attempt to eat or drink anything else the rest of the evening. This morning I am at least able to drink coffee without any choking feelings. In the future, I will be careful to take small bites and remember to chew thoroughly before swallowing my food.
