Overwhelmed or Frustrated?

if we become overwhelmed and/or frustrated we don’t see things how they really are, rather we see things as our minds would have us believe they are. Little disagreements become major battles, usually easily accomplished tasks burst into huge complex wrestling matches while customers we normally deal with easily become problem children asking for a timeout. Eckhart Tolle suggests in chapter two of The Power of Now that our minds are always seeking to deny the Now and to escape from it. “In other words,” he continues, “the more you identify with your mind, the more you suffer.” We all allow our minds to control our lives. This leads to our becoming stressed out all the time. Tolle tells us that “the intensity of pain, we experience, depends on degree of resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified with your mind.”

If we then determine that it is we who are Now in control of our lives we suffer less and are more creative. Having failed to succeed at something in the past does not mean we must fail at future attempts. None of us rode a bicycle the first time we tried If we allow it, our mind will see the tiniest opening and take over to create doom and gloom in our lives.

If I see a problem approaching, I can choose to approach it using all my previous life experience without thinking about the consequences of allowing my mind free rein, or I can size up the situation and think about the alternatives and take a fresh new look at things. Am I prepared and capable of dealing with this situation without letting my mind take over and create chaos? Do you think this new approach might have a more pleasant outcome?

Many of us choose to look at our “opportunities” in a negative manner which ends up being a self fullfilling prophecy. In other words, what we expect, we tend to get. Frustration can be the result of multiple situations coming up at the same time so we become upset over little things. Once again, I refer to my mantra “there are some decisions that should be made at high noon on a park bench” so we don’t have to fight or flee because we haven’t prepared for the situation. That is not to say that I go around figuring out every little thing in life ahead of time - I don’t, but I do take a look at major things as far in advvance as possible so I am not overwhelmed when they turn up in the midst of the little things. This way, your mind isn’t in total control and you may possibly wrest control away from it instead of being thrown into the chaos of the moment.

This allows us to be more aware of our situations and not lead around by the nose as our mind wants to do.
