Some would say if you aren’t stressed, you aren’t trying. Yes, it is a part of our everyday life but it is how we handle it that determines what kind of life we live. You can choose to be adjusting to life’s little snafu’s or you can let them control you.
There are some good negative ways to handle stress:
No is you friend; if you learn to say no then it is possible to control what others ask of you. This prevents overload from others dumping their chores on you. Important issues require time and planning that others may wish to drain you of.
Are you a people pleaser? In other words do you try to do everything anyone asks of you? And then end up burning the proverbial candle at both ends because many things take longer than expected. Learn to over exagerate the amount of time you think something will take so you have some leeway in case there is a snafu and also, when you complete the task in less than the planned time, you will have a reason to celebrate your accomplishment.
Reduce what is expected by examining with a microscope the tasks you have taken on. Many times things we think some things must get done rather than would be nice to be done. Only you can do what you have time for and some things fall into the would be nice to be done category and maybe should be put on the back burner for a rainy day when you have nothing else to do. Or they can be elimnated altogether.
Another good negative way to handle stress is to plan ahead and prevent problems before they arise. Being able to see the train coming allows you to prepare to get off the track and maybe even avoid the tracks totally. You don’t end up chasing the little things when you should be dealing with the big things that sometimes crop up. Like a Boy Scout - Be Prepared.
Oh, and don’t be afraid to pass some of your tasks off on someone else. Either by delegation or by asking for help. It isn’t necessary for you to do everything even if someone has tasked you with it. You can always ask them to get you some help or have them prioritize the tasks they have given you. This way, they have a responsibility in what gets accomplished as well.
Last but not least, don’t try to hit one out of the ballpark every time up at bat. Do your best and move on to something else. As long as you can say you gave it the old college try then nobody can complain except the perfectionist. And nothing you do will totally please the perfectionist. If someone wants perfection, then let them stress over the final 2-3%. With some people, no matter how hard you try, you can’t do things well enough to please them so there is no point in stressing out trying to do so.
So now you have some ideas on managing the stress in your life without becoming stressed out managing the stress.
While these suggestions help reduce stress over time sometimes we need immediate results. For information for Managing Stress, get this free white paper.
