Is Stress Really Part of Your Life?

As humans we all suffer from stress.  Similar to grief and happiness, we cannot avoid it.  As a response to stresses we experience daily, our bodies have physical reactions which include increase in blood pressure, increased heart rate, metabolism and breathing.  Everyone is different so the real benefit is finding out your personal level of tolerance for stressing situations.  If you manage the stress instead of letting it manage you, your life will be more balanced.  The following are some methods of managing stress in daily life.

First we must deal with the myths of stress.  Since stress is all around me there is nothing I can do about it.  Wrong!  It is possible to arrange your life such that stressful situations don’t overcome you.  Effective planning, prioritizing and various coping methods can help you manage your stress.

Large problems can normally be broken down into individual parts.  For instance you don’t have to clean the whole house at one go.  Choose a single task to perform throughout the house and work at it until you get it done.  Then pick something else and so on.  Just like you eat an elephant - one bite at a time.  Or you might pick one room to clean before moving on to another.

You are not supposed to be a perfectionist.  One sure way to become stressed is to attempt to do a perfect job in the shortest time possible.  Those comic book characters may be able to do a perfect job quickly but no human can.

Uncomplicate your life by prioritizing your tasks.  Things that absolutely must be done go at the top of the list followed by other tasks.  Then weed out what can be eliminated as unnecessary or pass them off to someone else.  This allows you to concentrate on what you are good at and that must be done by you.  With the list prioritized, pick what is important to you and choose one thing to do next.

Keep in mind that you have a choice.  If you are stressed out you may forget this fact.  When you are feeling overwhelmed, use some self talk - you know, tell yourself “If I do things differently, the world won’t fall apart!  I have a choice“  Washing dishes can be put off until tomorrow without dire consequences.  Figure out in your minds eye how you can handle a stressful situation better.  Like an athlete who visualizes hitting the home run or the hole in one, dress rehearsals can lead to a positive approach to what is being attempted or done.

Deep breathing or quiet time can be of help.  A period of quiet introspection can have a calming influence and put things in a different light.  Setting realistic time schedules is important, with the emphasis being on realistic.  You can’t expect to work full speed ahead on a project without some interruptions so it is better to expect some delay in completion of a project.  This way you won’t be disappointed or surprised if the project takes longer than at first planned.  Don’t waste time trying to change what has happened - the tree bends with the wind and survives longer than that which is rigid.  Balance in your life means you must have some down time - all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy - and a stressed one to boot.  You aren’t the first one to have to juggle many things at once but you can do it.
