If you had less anxiety, more stamina and peaceful thinking could you accomplish more in less time? Or in a more enjoyable fashion? You would probably also have better health and possibly live longer. What is preventing all this you ask? It is something we can’t totally prevent; stress in our lives. It can steal our potential and weaken all aspects of our lives. For instance…
Our immune system is broken down by stress leaving us susceptible to diseases and sickness.
Heart problems and high blood pressure are caused by stress.
Stress can lead to addictions such as nicotine, alcohol, eating and work.
Social withdrawal leading to isolationism is also caused by stress.
To prevent these stress related symptoms one has to work against it and do things to balance mind, body, and spirit. Such as eating properly, getting plenty of sleep, and exercising regularly as well as taking time to relax.
We all know that a well balanced diet can improve our health but can it actually do something to your stress level? Research has shown that proper nutrition prevents physical failure due to the damage that stress can cause to our systems. You will feel stressed but with correct nutrition you can handle things in a more peaceful fashion. This is just one thing you can do to increase your body’s fighting power.
Part of a well balanced diet is one that does not consist of large amounts of highly refined flour and sugar. These are empty calories that pump our internal furnace up right away but contain little to keep the fire burning very long. This in itself leads to peaks and valleys in our blood sugar which causes our bodies to dump insulin to counteract the heightened levels of blood sugar. Of course that results in our blood sugar levels going radically in the opposite direction and way too far. The resulting tug of war is not healthy for anyone. This is very similar to the adrenalin dump we experience when in a fight or flight situation.
If you want to further reduce stress then plan to exercise daily to improve circulation which means more parts of your body get the nutrients and oxygen they need to function properly. This increases the immune system and release of feel-good hormones. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress in most people.
Getting plenty of sleep also results in less stress because sleep relaxes your whole body thereby reversing the symptoms of stress. Sleep helps you to forget about what is causing distress in your life as your mind goes on autopilot instead of worrying over every little thing that could happen or has happened.
