More Stress Management
Stress is not the body’s reaction to emotional or physical attacks, it is a result of how we handle those physical and emotional attacks. Our bodies always react the same way to emotional or physical attacks by dumping massive amounts of adrenalin into the bloodstream which increases heart rate, quickens breathing and raises blood pressure. You become more aware mentally as your body throws up its defense mechanisms.
How we handle outside events determines whether we end up with this big hormone dump. If we percieve that an emotional event is something to be upset over then our body will react as if it were a physical threat and prepare for defense. There is nothing that says that we must treat a financial problem or a concern over weight or even a troubled relationship as though it were a physical attack. The ability to discriminate between emotional issues and phyaical attack will help to prevent ongoing stress.
The strain of trying to keep up with the outside world often takes its toll on our lives in the form of stress. It is not necessary to agonize over the type of vehicle you drive or how big your house isn’t, or if your children are as well dressed as the neighbor children. This only causes unnecessary stress in your life.
When unable to prevent emotional events from affecting your life there are still the time proven methods to counteract the adrenaline dump that may be occurring. Things such as taking slow deep breaths to counteract the increased heart rate and fast shallow breathing caused by the onset of stress. Or how about putting that heightened awareness and increased energy to work in the weight room working out? Or even taking the time to meditate and slow the heart and breathing rates.
All the above serve to decrease the effect of the massive hormone dump that has just taken place. Deep, slow breathing is probably the most effiective as it can be done immediately without having to go someplace. Of course leaving a situation can also defuse it but is not necessary for you to be able to practice deep breathing excercises.
The goal should be to learn to deal with unexpected emotional or physical events without becoming stressed. This is because once the event occurs and we react to it, it is too late to prevent the physical aspects of the situation. Far better to see things coming and prepare in advance and not let it affect you physically.
