I was just told that aromatherapy can be as effective at relieving stress as some of the other methods I’ve been discussing. It seems that various scents are thought to affect our central nervous system and sooth the tortured beast.
What are some of these scents?
A fresh floral scent used to make your surroundings smell sweeter.
A spring garden scent to relieve stress.
A citronella scent with an uplifting fragrance to sweeten the air.
Pine scent to remind one of the forest tranquility
Tropical paradise scent - what is that smell???? rotting fish?
Fresh orange scent provides an instant mood lift and stress relief.
Lavender scent to relieve stress.
And then there is Apple Cinnamon for that deliciously spiced fragrance for soothing relief.
Apparently aromatic scents contain essential oils that are absorbed through the skin or olfactory nerves and create changes in our bodies and minds. Aromas stimulate emotions, the moleculse affect the limbic system which is where memories are stored and pleasure and emotions are realized. The limbic system releases hormones that control the central nervous system.
Inhaling these essential oils can result in realizing a pleasant emotional state which may relieve stress related physical problems.
Using aromatics can be done either directly or diffusely. Direct use would be putting a couple of drops of oil onto a tissue and holding it under the nose and inhaling. Diffuse use would be in the form of a heating a container of essential oil to cause it to disperse into the air. Kind of like all those air freshners you see advertised everyday.
Dispersing relaxing scents such as chamomile, rose or sandalwood can assist in relieving anxiety and scents such as peppermint, lemon or basil can uplift one and counteract sluggishness due to overeating.
When essential oils come in contact with the skin, they are immediately absorbed and mix with natural body oils. Some oils can be used to cleanse, deodorize, tone and balance the body scents.
The positive affect of essential oils effects every level of our beings. These oils enhance our mind, body and spirit and can affect our lives on mystical, therapeutic and aesthetic levels.

I could not agree with you more. Aromatherapy is one of the simplest techniques to use for stress relief, and it’s truly amazing to me how effective it is for relieving stress. My favorite essential oil for stress relief is lavender, and always use a diffuser to get purest scent from the lavender. Thanks for the info.
